EMP Canada MEDIC FIRST AID Training Centres Association

Goals and Philosophies

The EMP Canada Training Centre Association's primary goal is to promote MEDIC FIRST AID training. In doing this, we support the Training Centres' activities as our goals are synonymous. All of our endeavors are focused on training as many of the general public and members of the Occupational First Aid sector in the EMP Canada MEDIC FIRST AID system. By doing this, we are ensuring that wherever there is an accident, injury or illness incident, there will also be someone close at hand who has been MEDIC FIRST AID trained to meet the needs of the situation. One of the aims of the Association is to establish standards assuring that the customers who take the MEDIC FIRST AID system of training do so because the MEDIC FIRST AID name assures them of a reliable and dependable standard of training. It is also the focus of the Association to assist our Training Centres with a continued growth and success of the MEDIC FIRST AID system. To do this, members of EMP Canada MEDIC FIRST AID attend the meetings of the International Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) and in particular, we recently attend the 2005 International Conference on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Emergency Cardiac Care (ECG) Science and Treatment Recommendations Conference. The Committee studies and researched the effectiveness of various first aid treatments and recommends changes where applicable. By attending these conferences,we stay on the cutting edge of the MEDIC FIRST AID training work.EMP Canada Training Centres receive numerous benefits, some of which are as follows:
  • Receive all benefits offered to EMP Canada Training Centres re product purchases.
  • The Facilitator and Student National Registry which keeps track of both the facilitators and students that successfully complete training. Further, it allows EMP Canada to secure statistical information that will help our Training Centres with marketing strategies.
  • Mailings that we send out which include the CEO Reports and standard updates and newsletters.
  • The opportunity to purchase Training Centre Liability / Errors & Omissions insurance at a much lower cost than can be secures in the open market.
  • A toll-free number that all of the Training Centres are unable to use when they have questions or concerns and require data regarding course presentations, etc.
  • The MEDIC FIRST AID course recognitions that we have received from both the federal and provincial governments throughout Canada. Without these recognitions, the training programs would have no value in the MEDIC FIRST AID market place.
  • Facilitator and student registry that allows the replacement of student cards when they are lost and to track or confirm student completions when it is needed.
  • the referral service that provides sales opportunities for Training Centres as we refer clients to their areas.
  • The EMP Canada MEDIC FIRST AID website www.firstaidtraining.com which we are delighted to hotlink to any of our Training Centres who desire to take advantage of this service.

First Aid Videos Get Specific

Have you ever had a request for more detailed first aid training for heart attacks, strokes or allergic reactions? Do you train in areas where workers are at higher than normal risk for hypothermia, snake bites or specific types of injuries such as amputations or burns? With the release of the MEDIC FIRST AID Specific First Aid Topic Series, you will have no problem meeting those requests.

Divided into two topic categories - Illness and Injury - the new series of 21 supplementary video programs easily integrate into the MEDIC FIRST AID Basic Version 5 training system. To use, simply the videos within the managing specific first aid topic segment in each program.

Instructors have the option of selecting topics specific to their needs. For example, clients in cold weather locations might benefit from the "Exposure to Cold" program, which details basic treatment options for hypothermia and frostbite. The Injury Programs - which include topics on Amputation and Impalements - are an ideal fit for industrial work sites where heavy machinery increases the risks of those types of injuries.

The videos run under ten minutes, and follow a fairly uniform structure. We have times scenarios on multiple topic vignettes followed by bulleted instructions on how to conduct a patient history and assessment. As more titles become available, I will mention them in coming CEO Reports. For the time being, the following are those that are now on hand in our Sidney, BC office:

  • Physical Assessment and Patient History
  • Responding to Allergic Reactions
  • Responding to Asthma
  • Responding to Bites and Stings
  • Responding to Seizures
  • Responding to Strokes
  • Responding to Heart Attacks
  • Responding to Poisoning
  • Exposure to Cold

Training Centre Instructor Monitoring Alberta and East to Ontario

The MEDIC FIRST AID name has come to stand for high quality and our Training Centres and membership are largely responsible for the standard of excellence that MEDIC FIRST AID has established throughout Canada. We all play a part, instructors, trainers, masters and EMP Canada staff working together, to ensure that students receive the very best possible training and that they have the necessary skills as well as the confidence to provide quality patient care when illness or injury occurs.

A good quality assurance program increases client satisfaction and helps maintain the recognitions and approvals that we have received from the various regulatory bodies throughout both the provinces and the federal government.

Consistent with our continuing efforts to maintain high quality/credibility that MEDIC FIRST AID training has established, we ar introducing and Instructor Monitoring Form. This form allows Training Centre to monitor the performance of the instructors within their employ. It is an excellent means of quality assurance. We have been employing this method in British Columbia for the past 12 months and it has proven very effective. I believe you will find the forms self-explanatory, but if you have any questions or concerns in this regard please do not hesitate to give me a call.

It is our intention to introduce the monitoring system without delay and would ask that you commence the review of your instructors on receipt of this notification. We would also request that copies of the forms your use in the monitoring process be forwarded to us with the date of the course during which the monitoring took place. We will then ensure that the form is placed into the appropriate instructor binder with notations being placed on the national computer base.

The importance of this new monitoring system is amplified by the WorkSafeBC /OH&S offices throughout Canada who are now auditing Training Centres. Once again, we thank you for your cooperation in this regard and I believe you will find it to be very constructive as well as a very supportive method for both the Training Centres as well as our instructors.

Facilitator Renewal Information - Annual Renewal

Permit to Teach

There is a facilitator (Instructor, Trainer, Master) renewal form that needs to be signed on an annual basis. This document has statement that in part identifies the facilitator agreeing to maintain the standards of EMP Canada. This is the document that is signed by all EMP Canada facilitator nationally.

In addition to the completion and signing of the form there is a minimal renewal fee tat helps to cover the costs relating to the following:

  • the facilitator and student national registry which keeps track of both facilitators and students that successfully complete training. Further, it allows EMP Canada to secure statistical information that can help both the facilitators and their training centres with marketing strategies.
  • facilitator meetings that we send out which include the CEO Reports and standard updates, etc.
  • the opportunity to purchase facilitator insurance at a much lower cost than can be secured in the open market.
  • a toll free number that all of the facilitators are able to use when thy have questions or concerns and require data regarding course presentations, etc.
  • the MEDIC FIRST AID course recognitions that we have received from both the Federal and Provincial governments throughout Canada.
  • the facilitator and student registry that allows us to replace student cards when they are lost and to track or confirm student completions when it is needed
  • the referral service that provides training opportunities for facilitators and training centres

The list goes on and will continue to grow as our presence in the Provinces of Canada grows. The mention of these benefits is only to identify the overheads that EMP Canada is subject to and consequently why there is an annual renewal fee.

However, EMP Canada does recognize that this annual renewal fee can cause a hardship for those facilitators who have multiple certifications and conduct a variety of MEDIC FIRST AID training programs. With this in mind, EMP Canada has revised the facilitator fees.

Revised Facilitator Annual Renewal Fees

  • renewal of current membership and one teaching status certification - $25.00
  • renewal fee for current membership and two teaching status certifications - $40.00
