NEW LOOK TO THE EMP CANADA WEBSITE

The improved look of the company website is designed to enrich and simplify the online customer experience. It is also designed to provide a greater depth of responding to our Training Centre needs and requirements. As an example, we now have a listing of our Training Centres all across Canada in an alphabetical and provincial alignment. This will facilitate students who go online looking for training enabling them to locate an EMP Canada Centre that is close to their location.

Our hope is over the next few months to hotlink as many as possible of our Training Centres so that a student seeking training will not have to leave the site but can go directly to the closest Training Centre for more information. There are also specific areas on the website that will assist our members to locate and become better informed on products that we have available. In addition, they can go to sections of the site that relate to insurance in particular for Training Centres, instructors and Occupational First Aid Attendants.

In this regard, our instructor insurance has now been expanded to include not only our EMP Canada instructors but those who have been trained by the Workers' Compensation Board of British Columbia. Further, the Training Centre insurance that we now have available at a base price that is extremely viable when compared to the charges presently being experienced in the regular market.

Commercial General Liability Insurance

and Errors & Omissions Coverage

What does Liability/Errors & Omissions insurance refer to?

Covers losses caused by injuries to persons and legal liability imposed upon the insured for such injury or for damage to the property of others. It also includes other types of coverage such as burglary, glass, fidelity and surety bonds.

What coverage does a professional policy provide?

This is insurance covering legal liabilities of professionals and indemnifies the insured for any loss sustained because of the rendering or failure to render professional services. e.g.: Trainers, Instructors providing emergency medical training to others.

What other operations will be included under the professional liability?

By agreement with the underwriter, all of the standard coverages afforded under a commercial general liability policy will be included. This means that other exposures to loss, which may occur during training, will be covered. e.g.: a student has an oxygen cylinder drop on his/her foot causing severe injury. The C.G.L. will respond if there is any legal liability.

What about costs of legal defense if a suit or action is started against me?

The liability insurance will do three very important things for you. Firstly, it will investigate the potential losses. Secondly, it will pay the costs to defend any legal action and thirdly, it will pay the amount of any court awarded judgment, up to the limit of the policy.

What coverage will be available under the "property" insurance?

There are two forms of coverage available, both of which provide "all risk" coverage subject to a deductible for each and every loss. The coverage recommended for any property used away from the premises is a miscellaneous floater policy wherein you can list the items to be insured and the amount of insurance, i.e. the replacement value of the items being insured.

What is the policy period?

The policy effective date will be January 1 in each year and the expiry date will be at 12:01 a.m. on the following January 1.

I am sure that there will be other questions so please do not hesitate to call our offices in Sidney as we will be pleased to help you. Have You Moved Recently?

Important notice for EMP Trainer and Instructor members.

During the past twelve months it has become very evident that our members are not updating their change of address with us. This has resulted in our mailing of CEO Reports, etc. being returned to us and this becomes important at instructor renewal dates. In addition, with all of the changes that have taken place during the course of the last twelve months, the need to receive updates is so important. If you have moved within the last year and a half it would be an excellent idea to make us aware of the address change so that we can check and ensure that you are receiving all of the reports, etc. that again, are so important to the maintaining of your teaching status.

Important Notices for EMP Trainers and Instructor Members

Records of all MFA training must be maintained.

A copy of all rosters (written or electronically generated), class evaluations, and instructor or trainer applications must be submitted to EMP Canada and a second copy kept in a training file maintained by the authorized instructor, trainer and/or master.

EMP Canada staff review all of the rosters and class evaluations as they arrive from our members across the nation. This function is an integral component of the quality assurance process that helps us to maintain the credibility of the EMP programs. Unfortunately, over a period of time some of us have fallen into the habit of grouping the rosters and evaluations _ that is sending in rosters and evaluations for classes conducted over a period of perhaps several months.

In this regard, it is important to recognize that the standards we, agreed to as instructors/trainers, include an undertaking that rosters will be forwarded without delay.

In this light, effective January 1, 2005 all rosters and class evaluations are required to be received by EMP Canada no later than 30 days after course completion.

Training Centre Instructor Monitoring

Alberta and East to Ontario

The MEDIC FIRST AID® name has come to stand for high quality and our Training Centres and membership are largely responsible for the standard of excellence that MEDIC FIRST AID® has established throughout Canada. We all play a part, instructors, trainers, masters and EMP Canada staff working together, to ensure that students receive the very best possible training and that they have the necessary skills as well as the confidence to provide quality patient care when illness or injury occurs.

A good quality assurance program increases client satisfaction and helps maintain the recognitions and approvals that we have received from the various regulatory bodies throughout both the provinces and the federal government.

Consistent with our continuing efforts to maintain high quality/credibility that MEDIC FIRST AID® training has established, we are introducing an Instructor Monitoring Form. This form allows Training Centre to monitor the performance of the instructors within their employ. It is an excellent means of constructive feedback to the instructors as well as being a great means of quality assurance. We have been employing this method in British Columbia for the past 12 months and it has proven very effective. I believe you will find the forms self-explanatory, but if you have any questions or concerns in this regard please do not hesitate to give me a call.

It is our intention to introduce the monitoring system without delay and would ask that you commence the review of your instructors on receipt of this notification. We would also request that copies of the forms you use in the monitoring process be forwarded to us with the date of the course during which the monitoring took place. We will then ensure that the form is placed into the appropriate instructor binder with notations being placed on the national computer base.

The importance of this new monitoring system is amplified by the WCB/OH&S offices throughout Canada who are now auditing Training Centres. Once again, we thank you for your cooperation in this regard and I believe you will find it to be very constructive as well as a very supportive method for both the Training Centres as well as our instructors.

EMP Canada Version 5

MEDIC FIRST AID®

The implementation of the Version 5 MEDIC FIRST AID® training is now established across the nation. There are still some who have yet to make the cross-over but the majority of our instructors are already using MFA Version 5. This new system incorporates all of the revised guidelines that the American Heart Association published in "Guidelines 2004 CPR and ECC International Consensus on Sciences". All of the Version 5 instructor guides reflect those changes.

With this in mind, we anticipate that the MFA Mark III system will be retired/no longer supported as of June 1, 2005

Training Centre and Trainer Information Concerning

Instructor Certification

The following is a reminder of the paper trail that is needed to be provided along with instructor application forms. The first important item is to ensure confirmation is enclosed concerning the applicant's medical background.

· Copy of EMR/EMT-A paramedic certification card

· Instructor status with another recognized national/international agency (copy of certification card)

· Copies of skill evaluation sheets and academic exams, in particular the CCIRG exam and the 100 question academic exam.

· Ensure instructor application form is completed in full and signed. The instructor agreement forms need also to be signed and attached with the application.

· The instructor monitoring form that is completed as the applicant teaches an actual segment of the program to a group of students. It gauges the applicant's performance as to whether it is satisfactory.

The need to forward all of the above documentation with each of the instructor applications that are mailed to EMP Canada is readily apparent. In order for us to certify the instructor to teach, we must review the above documentation. We hope this will assist all of our trainers and Training Centres which in turn will speed up the turn around of instructor applications.
